Knoxville (TN) Halls High School senior QB Zac Dowdy (6-foot-1 190 lbs) has had to overcome a lot just to be able to play his senior year. Involved in a car accident right before the start of the season, Dowdy has not only comeback, but has been an inspiration to his team.

"I had been working real hard getting ready for my senior year" said Dowdy. "At the end of last season, I took one week off until Thanksgiving. This summer, I worked out at D-1 3 times a week. I worked primarily on my speed, throwing and lifting."

Things took a dramatic turn for Zac when he was involved in a nearly fatal car accident late in the summer. "The doctors told me that I wouldn't be able to play football again right after the accident" said Dowdy. "They later came back and said that if they take my spleen out, it could be 6-7 weeks maybe, until I could play. I made up my mind then that I was going to get back."

During his time in the hospital, Zac's support group rallied around and kept him focused on the task at hand.

"Zac's best friend, Jake Long stayed at the hospital the whole time" said Ken Dowdy, Zac's father. "Other people like his trainer Dunstan Kendrick and me rallied around him and helped him create a plan to get back this season. Watching the jamboree football game with him at the time was very emotional." Zac would end up missing the 1st 5 games of the season and his teammates honored him by wearing a #14 decal on their helmets.

The season for the Red Devils as a result of the injuries to Zac and some other misfortunes hasn't gone according to plan. "We had high hopes to in the beginning to win out" said Zac Dowdy.

"We played one of the #1 teams in the state. We played teams close, but lost our 1st 5 games. I just took a leadership role and helped coach up the quarterbacks." Dowdy's return came in the 6thy game for Halls, but he didn't immediately get tossed in the action upon his return."I didn't start my 1st game back" said Dowdy.

"I split time with another quarterback. I drove the team down into the red zone 4 times but we fumbled on every opportunity. The 1st game that I started after the injury, everybody was loose. I had 150 yards and 3 TD's in that game and 4tds and almost 200 yards in our game after that." The #14 decals given out at the beginning of the season are still on the Red Devil helmets.

Zac is just happy to be playing football again and he would like to continue playing at the next level.

Although his opportunities are limited at this point, he remains optimistic. "I'm wide open to any school" said Dowdy. "I'm very open-minded." Zac's father Ken added, "He just wants to play football, we would like to keep him as close as possible, but we don't ever want to prevent him from chasing his dreams."
